Haven House is a non-profit organization offering a 24-hour shelter and crisis hotline, support services, youth programs, and community awareness programs.
We are currently seeking a part-time Domestic Violence Shelter Advocate for the M-F 6 pm - 10 pm shift.
This role provides coverage of the shelter/safehouse programs by overseeing client activity, providing direct client services, answering the hotline, and maintaining a safe, clean, and functional shelter/safehouse facility.
Essential Duties:
Complete intakes for incoming clients/families Individual counseling Crisis intervention Limited case management Advocacy and support to safehouse clients and hotline callers Oversee evening client activity to ensure that the safehouse program runs smoothly, including overseeing chores, meal preparation and adherence of shelter/agency rules, guidelines and policies.
Provide assistance with childcare while clients are in Support Group; assist with children's support group Provide education and information related to domestic violence topics Provide and teach personal advocacy to clients related to contacting resources and local referral sources.
Networks with community agencies and individuals as well as provide information/referrals for clients Instruct and encourage clients to use self-determination and allow them to make their own informed decisions Reports maintenance, security and other issues to supervisor as soon as possible Supervises and trains volunteers and/or students as assigned Participates in the on-call rotation one night per week Other duties as needed:
shopping, documenting and organizing donations, cleaning vacant rooms, etc.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Domestic Violence Issues:
Understanding of the dynamics, impact, and legal aspects related to domestic violence.
Cultural Competency:
Awareness and sensitivity to diverse cultural backgrounds, norms, and practices.
Computer Skills:
Familiarity with basic computer operations, software applications, and digital communication tools.
Crisis Management Skills:
Capability to remain calm and composed during high-stress situations, especially when dealing with crisis or emergency cases.
Emotional Resilience:
Capacity to handle emotionally charged situations and maintain professional composure.
Adaptability:
Ability to adjust to changing circumstances and respond effectively to various challenges.
Education and
Experience:
Associate's degree in social service field (social work, psychology, counseling, family studies, etc.
) required; bachelor's degree preferred.
In place of degree, experience in social services providing case management/client education and resource referral may be considered.
Experience working with special populations/issues.
Experience working with confidential and sensitive information.
Scheduled Shift:
Monday-Friday, 6pm-10pm On-Call Rotation Schedule may change as safehouse needs change Ability to commute/relocate:
Due to on-call responsibilities, must reside within 20-25 minutes from Alcoa area.

This position is stationed in the emergency shelter There are possible safety risks in working in an emergency shelter.
The agency provides a security system but can't account for all risks involved in domestic violence work.
